Snapshots of Ukrainian Life, Part 10

Free medicine and education for all! We will return the social guarantees that have been taken from the people. The Communist Party demands: return the country to the people! (For more explanation of this, keep reading...)

Summer Picnic Supplies:
    • tablecloth
    • cutlery
    • food
    • disposable plastic shot glasses ✔ (complete with a very serious picture of two men and one woman at a business meeting!)
During a recent picnic I tried to explain why it would be weird to bring vodka to a picnic in America. Wine, maybe. But vodka? Although picnics would probably be a lot more fun that way...
Movie theaters in Ukraine sell tickets by seat. When you pay for the tickets you also pick out the seat you want to sit in. A little color-coded screen shows you the seats still available. Cool idea, huh?

Next to the tongues and hearts in the local butcher shop, there is a cow udder for sale. How exactly does one cook a cow udder? Or cow lungs? Please explain!

Summer's hottest toothpaste flavor
Going back to the "what will happen when we've explored all of the metro stops?" issue, I recently saw a Kharkov metro map with a potential new line (from Maselskovo to Heroiv Pratsi). Has anyone else seen this?
Yes, as you may have noticed, the communist party is alive and kicking. And advertising. Parliamentary elections are coming up in Ukraine in October and this has brought a slew of ads on billboards and street signs.
The place for a corrupted official- jail! Fight for this October 28th. Return the country to the people! -The Communist Party of Ukraine
Tax on wealth, tax on the rich. Fight for this October 28th. Return the country to the people! -The Communist Party of Ukraine
Do you feel your country? This ad is for Victor Medvedchuk / the Ukrainian Choice movement. How funny that he's pro-Russia and his last name is the Ukrainian version of the former President of Russia's last name! Anyways, check out this very interesting article for more: Kremlin-imposed "Ukrainian Choice"

7 days without it already, 17 more days until the city turns the hot water back on in our neighborhood. No!!!!!!! D pointed out that it's better to have only cold water than to have no water, which I vehemently disagreed with...until waking up yesterday morning and finding no water at all. All day. And all night. And the temperature was in the 90s. He's right. I'll take the cold water back please!

Speaking of hot water outages, D told me that you can buy some kind of heating device that you stick in water. For example, fill up the bathtub with cold water and then magically heat it up to boiling temp. Because, uh, yes, in my last life I was a lobster ; ) He says when his family immigrated to the US they brought one along "just in case". I was going to try to hunt down one of these magical heating devices (have you heard of these things?) but now we're planning to move to another apartment and I discovered an even more magical word: a boiler!

Before we wrap things up, one recent Engrish find for you to enjoy : )
Sunglusses, anyone? In the window of a store on Pushkinska street.

A: I'm not experienced in doing this, but my mother simply boiled or stewed cow udder or cow lung. Though I didn't like taste of both. Gustibus et coloribus.... In slashing 90-s not many people could afford themselves normal meat.
What was a surprise much later when I discovered that Foie gras tasted for me as simple boiled cow udder, thus updating the list of things I'd avoid.

A: It's кипятильник! Requires electricity and some caution for use though can be very helpful. Produced industrially or can be hand-made out of electric wire, two pieces of thin metal (e.g. shaving blades) as electrodes, and insulation between and around.
